American evangelist Franklin Graham has preached a Gospel message to 90,000 Peruvians over two nights last weekend in a packed National Stadium in the capital Lima.
Billy Graham’s son read from the Scriptures about forgiveness and new life in Jesus Christ during the Esperanza Lima (Hope for Lima) festival.
It was originally planned as a one-night event, but a second night was added because of the “overwhelmingly positive response from thousands of pastors when the festival was announced.”
More than 41,000 filled the stadium on Saturday night followed by 48,500 on Sunday night.
Thousands more crammed into surrounding streets to hear Reverend Graham’s sermon.
FRANKLIN GRAHAM SHARED THE PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON
During his message, the American preacher shared the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15.
He described the story of a young man who left home in search of worldly pleasures, but eventually returned to his father, who welcomed him with love.
Reverend Graham used the passage to remind his attentive audience that God also welcomes with mercy those who return to Him.
“I want you to know tonight that you can have a new life through Jesus Christ, God’s Son,” he told the crowd.
“ONLY THE BLOOD OF JESUS CAN SAVE YOU”
“The entire world is infected with sin. Without Jesus you have no hope,” his sermon continued.
“You cannot save yourself. You cannot forgive yourself. The church cannot save you. Religion cannot save you.”
“Only the blood of Jesus can save you. He is the only way.”
“He came from heaven to this earth to take your sins.”
“He died and shed His blood on the cross for you.”
“Tonight you can put your faith and trust in Him and be saved from your sins and have a new life.”
REVEREND GRAHAM ALSO TOLD THE STORY OF THE BLIND BEGGAR
He also shared the story of the blind beggar Bartimaeus from Mark 10.
“Bartimaeus had no hope and time was running out,” Franklin Graham told the packed stadium.
“But Bartimaeus had heard about Jesus’ miracles. He called to Jesus, believing the Messiah could heal his blindness.”
“The crowd tried to quiet him, but Jesus heard Bartimaeus.”
“Bartimaeus prayed because he believed Jesus could heal him.”
So, he called His name in faith.”
“That’s what I want you to do in just a moment.”
THOUSANDS RUSH FORWARD TO ACCEPT JESUS AS THEIR SAVIOUR
As soon as Reverend Graham finished his sermon, thousands moved towards the front of the stage to respond to his spiritual invitation.
According to an event report, “people filled the stadium aisles” even before he finished speaking.
Many came to the front to pray, express repentance and accept Jesus as their Saviour.
The scene reflected the spiritual impact of the event on people seeking hope and personal transformation.
BLIND BEGGAR STORY TOUCHES HEARTS OF TWO FRIENDS
Good friends Mariana and Sonia were among them.
Six years ago, Mariana started going to the hair salon where Sonia worked.
Both women could relate to the blind beggar’s story.
“I used to feel that nobody cared about me,” Mariana said.
“There were times when I felt very alone, not knowing who to talk to.”
HOW THE FRIENDS RESPONDED TO GRAHAM’S PREACHING
Mariana and Sonia were ready to respond.
They clung to each other in tears as a prayer counsellor comforted them and answered their questions.
“When he called everyone to come to the front, my heart started to break down,” said Mariana.
“I felt like something inside me was moving. I felt a peace in my heart.”
Sonia attended the outreach Saturday night, but she didn’t come forward.
On Sunday, she went with Mariana to pray at the front of the stadium.
“The word that I’m leaving with tonight is hope,” she said as she left.
“I CAME TO LIMA TO SHARE THE TRUTH”
Franklin Graham wrote: “It was such a privilege to preach the Gospel in Lima at the National Stadium of Peru.”
“I told the crowd that I had come to Lima for a reason — to share the Truth! Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father, except through Me.”
Images accompanying his social media posts show attendees lifting their hands in the air, and the crowd attentively listening to his remarks.
“We give God all the glory for the thousands who made the most important decision of their lives tonight — to turn from their sins and put their trust in Jesus Christ!” the evangelist exclaimed.
2,300 CHURCHES HELPED ORGANISE THE OUTREACH
In addition to the evangelistic message, the event included live music from international Christian artists such as Charity Gayle, The Afters, Christine D’Clario and Jahaziel Band.
Organisers arranged 600 free buses each night to transport people from different parts of the city to the stadium.
The festival involved thousands of believers and more than 2,300 churches worked together to support the evangelistic event initiative and follow up with those who decided to begin their journey of faith.
The gathering took place 28 years after Franklin Graham preached at the same stadium in 1998
The Esperanza Lima festival is one of the largest recent evangelistic gatherings in the Peruvian capital, where thousands heard a message of forgiveness, restoration and new life in Jesus.
