Christian Perspectives Of The Iran War

Christian commentator and Newcastle pastor David Robertson has been trying to look at the Iran war from as wide a Christian perspective as possible.

He told Vision Radio: “I have certain premises. Number one: War is never good, we don’t rejoice at war.”

“Number two: I think we need to be very careful about how we make analysis and bring in the notion that God is on our side.”

“I’ve been disturbed by reports that some US commanders are alleged to have insinuated that they’re fighting a holy war.”

“Number three: You get Christians who say: War is never right. There has to be another way.

“My response is always: What is the other way?

“IT IS NOT WRONG TO BE THANKFUL THAT THE SUPREME LEADER IS GONE”

“I am delighted for the Iranian people that their dictator is dead and the infrastructure of his government is being destroyed,” Pastor Robertson declared.

“I don’t know how this is going to work out, but it’s not wrong to be thankful that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has gone. He was an absolutely evil man in almost every way.”

“It astounds me that in Australia, we have seen in recent months and even in this past week, people marching with Khamenei posters as though he was some kind of saint.”

“While Iranian women celebrate their own country being bombed and the death of their leader, western women on the streets are lamenting the death of Khamenei.”

“That to me is astonishing and deeply disturbing.”

“IT’S A SITUATION OF SORROW AND ALMOST A PLEA FOR JESUS TO END THIS MESS”

“Overall it’s a situation of sorrow, one of prayerfulness, and almost one of come Lord Jesus, come and end this mess,” David Robertson observed.

“If you want to put a Biblical verse in, I would talk about how you beat your swords into ploughshares, and what I would suggest is the more Iranian missiles that are destroyed, the better.”

The pre-emptive strike stuff really annoys me because Iran has been fighting a war for decades. It’s been using Hezbollah, it’s been the Houthis in Yemen, and above all, Hamas, to fight a war against Israel”.

“These are people who chant on their streets Death to the West and they mean it. They have a martyrdom complex.”

“So this is the reality that has been going on.”

“ISRAEL AND MUSLIMS CAN WORK TOGETHER”

The Christian commentator revealed to Vision Radio’s 20Twenty program: “One of the most interesting things I’ve seen is in the London suburb of Golders Green where thousands of Jews and Iranians celebrated together with Israeli flags and Iranian flags.”

“That doesn’t fit the narrative that people have of Israel being this mass genocidal state that can’t work with Muslims.”

“I think it can. The best case scenario that could come out of this, and I hope it does, is that there’s a new Iranian government which works with Israel and Saudi Arabia to ensure as much peace as possible.”

“The problem in all of this are the Iranians, Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis, but also militants in Pakistan and Arab nations who want to see Israel destroyed.

EGYPT AND JORDAN AVOID GETTING INVOLVED

David Robertson points out some key Muslim nations avoid taking that stand: “You look at a country like Egypt that borders onto Gaza.”

“If Egypt really believed that there was genocide in Gaza, why hasn’t Egypt opened its border to let the Palestinians in?”

“And why hasn’t Jordan said it would take any more Palestinians?”

“I think what’s been happening is Israel has been living under siege for 40 years.”

“And if this lifts that siege to some degree, I think it will be good for the whole Middle East.”

“Now, whether it happens or not, who knows? We could end up with something worse. But I’m pretty sure that staying as is, was not an option.”

BEWARE OF SOCIAL MEDIA PROPAGANDA

The Newcastle-based pastor warned: “You have to be really careful about propaganda because on social media, you’re getting all these videos that are AI generated.”

“I’ve seen a picture that’s been passed around, even by United Nations people, of supposed Iranian children’s coffins. But it’s fake. It’s AI.”

“On the moral side, I think we go back to Augustine’s Just War Theory that asks, is an action proportionate? Is it necessary? Would there be a great evil occur if we didn’t do it?”

“I think Christian Just War Theory is an excellent idea. Very often not put into practice, but I think we do need to think about it morally.”

CAUTION URGED ON MAKING JUDGEMENTS AND CHRISTIAN COMMENTS

“We need to be very cautious about handing out judgements based upon what we’ve read or seen on social media,” Pastor Robertson forewarned.

I’m really interested in what Christian leaders say on issues like this.”

“I don’t think anyone listens to what Christian leaders say, and I think we far too often just reflect the views of the culture around us and whatever particular political ideology we follow.”

“However, where I’m really interested in what Christian leaders have to say is when they go against the flow and speak out.”

‘”I WANT TO HEAR FROM CHRISTIAN LEADERS ON THE FRONTLINE, NOT THOSE IN THE WEST”

David Robertson told Vision Radio: “I was so impressed by the Iranian women’s football team who refused to sing the Iranian national anthem at the Women’s Asian Cup currently being held in Australia.”

“I thought, wow, that’s courage.”

“I’m interested in what Palestinian Christian leaders have to say in the West Bank or in Israel.”

“I’m interested in what Christian leaders in Iran have to say.”

“I am not interested in what Christian leaders have to say in West when they’re just addressing their government or their own constituency.”

“Far too often it just strikes me as beige commentary.”
